2004 Achievement Award Recipient
Dennis Felton is currently the head coach of the University of Georgia men's basketball team, following a very successful five-year term as head coach at Western Kentucky University. Dennis was hired to lead the WKU team at a time when it was very troubled, and he quickly turned that program around and made it the best team in the Sun Belt Conference three years running, being the first coach in WKU history to take the team to the NCAA tournament three years in a row. Dennis also emphasized his players' academic performance, with 100% of his players graduating (all but two, that he inherited, earning their degrees on time). Dennis earned a nationwide reputation as a coach who could inspire both winning performance and academic excellence, while instilling integrity to a major college athletic program. UGA Athletic Director Vince Dooley has stated that "Dennis is a man of integrity, an exceptional communicator and teacher and family man." Dennis' bio on the UGA web site (http://georgiadogs.collegesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/felton_dennis00.html) notes that he got his coaching start at Oxon Hill High School, moving on to Charles County C.C., and then to a series of university coaching positions. Dennis' bio also notes that Dennis was a star athlete at Surrattsville! |
