  Elsa Tlapechco (Thomas V. Miller, Sr. Scholarship), Alexis Nicole Smith, Janine Hume-Dawson, Lawrence Brown II, Iyana Downie (Esther Clifton Miller Scholarship)  

 

ELSA TLAPECHCO – THOMAS V. MILLER, SR. SCHOLARSHIP. While at Surrattsville, Elsa was an honor roll student who maintained a 3.3 GPA, was an SGA member in grades 10, 11 and 12, served as SGA President in grades 11 and 12, was founder and President of the Hispanic American Leadership Organization, served as a Student Leader and Peer Mediator, was a member of the Art Club, and played on the Tennis Team. Outside of school, Elsa volunteered at the Humane Society, at the Special Olympics and at area animal shelters. Elsa plans to attend Stevenson University in the Fall majoring in biology, and to attend veterinarian school after college.

IYANA DOWNIE - ESTHER CLIFTON MILLER SCHOLARSHIP. While at Surrattsville, Iyana maintained a 3.6 GPA while completing AP classes in psychology, pre-calculus, computer graphics and biology. Iyana served as Wing Commander (the highest student position) in the School’s award-winning AFJROTC program, where she received numerous citations and awards. Iyana was the President of the National Honor Society and of G.E.M.S. (Girls Empowered Meeting With Success), and served as a Peer Mediator. Outside of School, Iyana was a Clinton Library Volunteer Reader, an escort at the Mt. Vernon Slave Memorial, a volunteer for Can You Care Food Drive, Children Fighting For Cancer, and the Special Olympics, and worked as a child care provider. (Iyana received the second highest number of community service hours – 638.5 -- in the Class of 2015.) Iyana plans to attend Virginia Wesleyan in the Fall, and to major in child psychology.

JANINE HUME-DAWSON. While at Surrattsville, Janine was on the Honor Roll and the Principal’s List, and maintained a 3.1 GPA. She was a member of the National Honor Society, the SGA, the Drill Team, the Morning Announcement Team, G.E.M.S. (Girls Empowered Meeting With Success), the Tennis Team, the Choir, and led the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign and the Can You Care Food Drive. Janine plans to attend Penn State-Altoona in the Fall as an AFJROTC student, majoring in psychology and minoring in pre-law. After college, Janine hopes to become a JAG lawyer.

ALEXIS NICOLE SMITH. Alexis maintained a 3.98 GPA at Surrattsville while taking AP calculus and statistics, and was on the Principal’s Honor Roll. She was a member of the SGA, and served as its Treasurer and Historian. She was Editor of the Yearbook, served as a Student Leader and class officer, was a member of the Track and Volleyball teams, and served on the Morning Announcement Team. In the Marching Band, Alexis served as Section Leader, Student Director and Drum Major. Alexis plans to attend Ohio State University in the Fall, majoring in athletic training.

LAWRENCE BROWN II. At Surrattsville, Lawrence maintained a GPA of 3.96, while taking AP courses in statistics and psychology, and being awarded the Principal’s Award in grades 10 and 11. He was a member of NHG, the Student Leadership Club, the History Club, the Society of Torch and Laurel, the Congress of Future Medical Leaders, and the Indoor and Outdoor Track Teams. Lawrence was awarded Second Place in the Write-a-Book Competition and First Place and Second Place at School Science Fairs. In the Fall Lawrence plans to attend Coastal Carolina University to pursue a healthcare career.
